“I’ll work anywhere in the world, as long as I can be competitive,” says Scott Steel Erectors President Dan Scott, who has taken on steel building projects in Santiago, Chile; Bimini, Bahamas and St. George, Bermuda as well as in China and South America. “Some of these countries don’t have the people to do this type of work.”
Closer to home, Scott Steel Erectors has worked across Canada, in Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories on a vast array of structures. Scott had worked for several steel erecting businesses and saw the opportunity in the market for a new company that would value professionalism, quality, respect for customers and safety. He also wanted security and control of his own destiny and so formed Scott Steel in 1989. Today, the company has approximately 160 full-time staff with a range of expertise from first-year apprentices to veteran engineers.

Operating as an open shop, Scott Steel’s highly trained site superintendents, crane operators, sheet metal installers, cladders, iron workers, field tradesmen and other staff are experienced in pre-engineered and conventional steel. Health and safety for customers and staff is a top priority. The company conducts daily and regular site safety inspections and has its own full-time, on-site health and safety staff. “We have a stringent safety policy, and we manage it ourselves with our own safety managers,” says Scott, “and we continuously get rebates every year.”
Scott Steel is continually developing safer work procedures. It trains employees in-house in areas such as hoisting and rigging, telescopic equipment, fall protection and aerial work platforms. The company believes safety is everyone’s responsibility and maintains and builds upon its reputation for safety and accountability.
Scott Steel Erectors performs in a safe, responsible fashion consistent with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations for Construction Projects and meets standards set in place by several industry sectors. Realizing that many of its customers are too busy with their own businesses to focus on steel building maintenance, Scott Steel Erectors introduced a maintenance program in 2002. The turnkey program is highly successful and sees the company’s trained, in-house staff take care of any maintenance issues and provide professional maintenance solutions. The maintenance program is available to both long-time and new clients, in one- to twenty-year warranties for American, Behlen, Butler, Robertson, Star, Steelway, Varco Pruden and other pre-engineered steel building brands.
The company offers the option to add maintenance programs to existing warranties issued with the installation of pre-engineered steel buildings. Plans can cover general inspections, roof leak repairs, flashing requiring repair or replacement, the installation of epoxy floors and the replacement of old or damaged siding structural components, doors, wet or damaged insulation and much more. All maintenance estimates are free of charge.
“We will go in and inspect overhead crane systems, inspect roofs and inspect structural steel for deficiencies or problems that the owner might have,” says Scott of the maintenance program. This valuable service is carried out by skilled staff and provides peace of mind for customers.
The company takes on projects as wide-ranging as a hangar for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Sioux Lookout or a potash barn in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, mining in British Columbia’s Dease Lake or works for Bimini Power in The Bahamas.
