For almost three decades, Scott Steel Erectors, Inc. has been a leader in high quality conventional steel buildings and general contracting with turnkey services from initial design to supply and erection. Its main location is on Northside Road in Burlington, Ontario and it has a second in King City, north of Toronto, but Scott Steel takes on projects across Canada and around the globe.

“I’ll work anywhere in the world, as long as I can be competitive,” says Scott Steel Erectors President Dan Scott, who has taken on steel building projects in Santiago, Chile; Bimini, Bahamas and St. George, Bermuda as well as in China and South America. “Some of these countries don’t have the people to do this type of work.”

Closer to home, Scott Steel Erectors has worked across Canada, in Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories on a vast array of structures. Scott had worked for several steel erecting businesses and saw the opportunity in the market for a new company that would value professionalism, quality, respect for customers and safety. He also wanted security and control of his own destiny and so formed Scott Steel in 1989. Today, the company has approximately 160 full-time staff with a range of expertise from first-year apprentices to veteran engineers.

Scott Steel Erectors has earned a reputation for quality installation, timely delivery, working within a budget, highly efficient project scheduling, safety and collaborating closely with customers to help them realize their construction goals.

Operating as an open shop, Scott Steel’s highly trained site superintendents, crane operators, sheet metal installers, cladders, iron workers, field tradesmen and other staff are experienced in pre-engineered and conventional steel. They handle all aspects of construction, anywhere in the world, in all types of construction projects, such as mining and oil sands works. Steel building erection requires specific skills and the development and implementation of extensive training programs, and Scott Steel has that.

For customers, this provides numerous gains, since the company serves as a single point of contact from project inception to completion. “By self-performing, we don’t have to mark everything up twice,” says Scott on keeping overall costs more reasonable. “We perform as a general contractor or as a prime contractor, and we have the advantage where we carry our own sub-trades.”

Scott Steel can precisely control and schedule erection and timing of all projects through owning and maintaining its own fleet of equipment and machinery including welding machines, specialized torqueing tensioning equipment, scissor lifts, telehandlers and aerial work platforms.

The company offers an extensive range of services including conventional structures, pre-engineered buildings, mechanical installations, wall cladding installations, overhead crane erection, conveyors, mechanical and hangar doors and others. It is proud to focus on the needs of every customer and carries an impressive client roster including Shell, Air Canada, Imperial Metals, Sifto, BHP and Suncor. The company earns repeat, and new business from clients seeking high quality, steel structures.

Steel buildings are being used more and more in commercial and industrial sectors as they have many benefits over traditional cinderblock buildings. These pre-engineered steel structures are strong and can be designed and erected quickly. “Steel buildings have a number of advantages,” says Scott. “They have the ability to achieve large spans, have great efficiency, a cost-effective price, low maintenance and are durable.”

Since they are made of steel, they are able to withstand extreme weather conditions and are resistant to problems that plague wood and other building materials, such as insect activity and fire. And many clients find them to be much more versatile than conventional methods of construction, as they allow for expansion if needed.

Structural steel buildings are ideal for customers requiring hangars, machine shops, manufacturing space, storage, sports facilities and much more. Scott Steel Erectors can create any structural steel erection or panelized wall systems and install mechanical or hangar doors, erect overhead cranes for Class A to Class E specifications. Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certified Scott Steel Erectors gets the job done right every single time.

Health and safety for customers and staff is a top priority. The company conducts daily and regular site safety inspections and has its own full-time, on-site health and safety staff. “We have a stringent safety policy, and we manage it ourselves with our own safety managers,” says Scott, “and we continuously get rebates every year.”

Scott Steel is continually developing safer work procedures. It trains employees in-house in areas such as hoisting and rigging, telescopic equipment, fall protection and aerial work platforms. The company believes safety is everyone’s responsibility and maintains and builds upon its reputation for safety and accountability.

Scott Steel Erectors performs in a safe, responsible fashion consistent with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations for Construction Projects and meets standards set in place by several industry sectors. It has completed the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA) supervisor training course and follows guidelines from the Mining Association of Canada and The Oil Sands Safety Association. Additionally, the company is active with other safety-focused organizations, namely the Ontario Construction Association, the Canadian Construction Association and Safety Group Ontario.

Realizing that many of its customers are too busy with their own businesses to focus on steel building maintenance, Scott Steel Erectors introduced a maintenance program in 2002. The turnkey program is highly successful and sees the company’s trained, in-house staff take care of any maintenance issues and provide professional maintenance solutions. The maintenance program is available to both long-time and new clients, in one- to twenty-year warranties for American, Behlen, Butler, Robertson, Star, Steelway, Varco Pruden and other pre-engineered steel building brands.

The company offers the option to add maintenance programs to existing warranties issued with the installation of pre-engineered steel buildings. Plans can cover general inspections, roof leak repairs, flashing requiring repair or replacement, the installation of epoxy floors and the replacement of old or damaged siding structural components, doors, wet or damaged insulation and much more. All maintenance estimates are free of charge.

“We will go in and inspect overhead crane systems, inspect roofs and inspect structural steel for deficiencies or problems that the owner might have,” says Scott of the maintenance program. This valuable service is carried out by skilled staff and provides peace of mind for customers.

The company takes on projects as wide-ranging as a hangar for the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Sioux Lookout or a potash barn in Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, mining in British Columbia’s Dease Lake or works for Bimini Power in The Bahamas.

“I want to treat people, my customers, and my staff the way I would want to be treated,” says Scott.
